The late great Nat king Cole was one of America's greatest classical musicians. He truly was said to be a man before his time. He was a man so smooth, who could make your grove, and dance out of your shoes. He sung classical music through the 1930s-40s. He is often compared to the late greatFrank Sinatra who also was one of America's best classical musicians.
What is very impressing about Nat king Cole is that he hosted a variety show back in the 1940's while in segregated times where blacks/whites were not treated equally. He appealed to both black/white alike and he was always at the top of the records with the songs: Unforgettable, Mona Lisa, Too young, and When I fall in love Smile. He could also sing in Spanish as well and preformed in Cuba. also made a Christmas album that also topped the charts and is as one of the greatest Christmas albums. He was a man who refused to preform in segregated places and was once beat in Birmingham Alabama in the middle of a concert by 3 white men. He never performed again in the south afterwards.
Nathaniel King Cole was born in Montgomery, Alabama on March 17, 1919. He started being a musician at the age of 12 playing the organ and singing as well. He song jazz, gospel, and European classical when growing up under his parents house. Cole got his big break when he sung the song Sweet Lorraine and a drunken barroom patron demanded him to sing it. His first mainstream hit was in 1943, he carried with him string orchestras and live bands to many theaters and ballrooms. He sold over millions of copies. He hosted "The Nat King Cole Show" for about a year and he decided to end the show himself. Years later he had a daughter named Natalie Cole, she is also i great singer as well.Natalie Cole and her father had a hit when Natalie mixed her own voice with her father's 1961 rendition of unforgettable as part of a tribute album to her father's music. The song and album of the same name won seven Grammy awards in 1992. Nathaniel Cole died on February 15, 1965 at the age of 45. You see, Nat King Cole was a heavy smoker and believed that cigarettes "kept his voice low". He died of lung cancer at St. John's hospital in Santa Monica California.
What Nat King Cole will be remembered for most is his classical music and his legendary unique voice that could carry a tune that would make your heart vibrate. He simply was a civil rights hero without even trying to be one. He truly was a man before his time and earned his way into a 1940's segregated America's hearts. For this he shall forever more be remembered as one of the greatest, and you will find his picture below the capital records building.
